Center for Origins Research Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Founded in 1989 as a "creationist resource center," the Center for Origins Research (CORE) at Bryan College will celebrate its 20th anniversary next summer. Initially just a single faculty member doing research and teaching part time, CORE has grown to two full-time research faculty, one full-time research assistant, and a new generation of students participating in the Origins Studies program. CORE faculty and staff now maintain a 2000-volume library of creationist materials, publish a monograph series CORE Issues in Creation, provide databases and online resources to creationists worldwide, in addition to conducting ground-breaking research in creationist biology. Through all of this growth, CORE has remained true to its identity as a young-age creationist organization and to its mission to develop and teach a creationist model of biological origins.
To commemorate twenty years of "building the model," CORE will be sponsoring a series of publications and special events throughout its twentieth year, 2008-2009. Also, students on campus will have the opportunity to participate in special courses during the spring semester. Below is the schedule of conferences, and a list of publications can be found here.
- November 8, the all new Origins Conference. Last held in 1999, CORE's Origins Conferences are designed to bring together students and educators with today's leading creationist researchers. This is an outstanding opportunity to learn about the newest findings in creationist research from the experts themselves! The 2008 Origins Conference will feature the current CORE director Dr. Todd Wood and CORE's founder Dr. Kurt Wise. Other speakers will be announced as they are confirmed. Click here for more details.
- February 4-5, Genesis Kinds: Creationism and the Origin of Species. In 1859, Charles Darwin famously argued against 'creationism,' but what do creationists really believe about the origin of species? You've heard Darwin's side of the story, now hear an international panel of scholars examine the 'mystery of mysteries,' the origin of species, from a biblical and creationist perspective. This conference will be held first in England and then in the US in July (see below). Click here for more details.
- February 27-28, War and Peace: 150 Years of Christian Encounters with Darwin. In the fall of 1859, Charles Darwin's Origin of Species began a transformation of biology, science itself, and ultimately all of Western culture. His "species theory" especially challenged the traditional Christian doctrines of creation. Some Christian reacted with outrage, while others welcomed Darwin's ideas. Join us as we explore widely different Christian encounters with Darwin. This symposium is part of the Bryan Center for Critical Thought and Practice. Click here for more details.
- July 31, Genesis Kinds: Creationism and the Origin of Species This conference will be held in Louisville, KY and will be identical to the one held in England in February. Click here for more details.
